D-51 Faguswerk Chair, 1911
Tecta, Germany

Walter Gropius

Ash, polyurethane cushion

W 61 cm, H 79 cm, D 56 cm

From 1908 to 1010, Gropius worked in Peter Behrens' architectural office. In 1910 he established his own practice and became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund.

These chairs, dating from the same year, were originally designed for his Fagus factory and encapsulate the Werkbund's debate about whether standardization and creative expression could be reconciled: the construction of this seat furniture is suitable for standardized production, yet it is aesthetic is decidedly individualistic.
