Noguchi was inspired by the traditional rice-paper lamps used by Japanese fishermen for night fishing, the lights have been in production for over 50 years and are still made by the same company in Japan using the traditional methods for creating japanese paper lanterns.

Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi used 'shoji' paper paper made by hand from boiled mulberry tree bark for his famous Akari lamps, bamboo ribbing, supported by a metal frame.
